Finikounda Accommodation

Of course, friends and relations stay with us. For others, there's a wide range of accommodation available around Finikounda, from fairly simple village rooms to good quality hotels with pools, or top quality family studios with catering facilities. For full local accommodation lists go to www.finikunda.com/eng/

Gordon and Wendy's Site (www.greekrooms4u.com) can make bookings for much accommodation, and also arrange car hire or airport taxis, either by phone or email.

We live just W of Finikounda, at the east end of Anemómilos beach (Anemo = wind, milos = mill, emphasis on on the middle o). At 36°48'27.9"N, 21°48'00"E to be precise. The near end is home to a camp site, two or three large houses, a couple of small tavernas, a windsurf beach hire outfit and some fine holiday bungalows.

We're 3 minutes walk from the beach and 7 minutes from the shops, cafés and other hot-spots (?) of Finikounda. We don't have an address. We're just ‘the big house you can see from the top of the hill’. That's us, just beyond Dion-Zois swimming pool.

Places to Go/ Things to Do

Locally. Obviously, four beaches, beachside tavernas and cafés. We have beach equipment in our house, and there’s windsurf and dinghy hire 3 min walk away. The Neilson Sailing hotel (the Golden Sun (20min walk east through the village) has a magnificent swimming pool, a bar open to the public, and its own quiet beach. The quietest beach is Loutsa, a further 10 minutes walk east. The far end of Loutsa is shaded by tamarisk trees; there are a couple of seasonal tavernas to keep you sustained en route.

Bikes can be hired for €10 a day, or €30 for 4 days.

Short Car or Bus Trips. Check out Messinia on the tab above. Pylos town and the Navarino bay area are very rewarding.

Organised Excursions. Local travel agents arrange excursions by bus to a variety of places, including Mistras and Corinth. These are big day trips, costing €25 - €50. There are also boat trips to Methoni and the offshore islands.

Big Car Trips. Adventurous stuff. Local car hire is available at about €50 a day or €150 for 5 days.  Go around Mani, long day’s trip around a strange place. Stop at Diros caves. Or go to Sparti and Mistras, one of the great historic sites of Greece. Maybe B&B en route.

Weather. If you want to check Greek weather before a day out, or before travelling, try http://www.poseidon.ncmr.gr/weather_forecast.html  for a three-day forecast. Pretty good.

Things to Bring

Bring your own beach towels, sun screen, some euros and a cash card. There are ATMs (and Pharmacies) in Finikounda,  Methoni and Pylos. The two of us get through about €40 - €50 a day, but we do live it up a bit. Otherwise, good books . . .

Dion Zois Villas

Our neighbours are Dion-Zois Villas , a well equipped group of five terraced bungalows with a big shared swimming pool, shaded parking, a covered picnic area and garden toys for young children.

Each bungalow is 40sq m in size, and has a living/dining area (two sofa/beds, air conditioning) with a kitchen (fridge, cooker) a twin bedroom, shower/toilet and a balcony. Prices range from €50 per day off season, €70 in June and September, to €100 a day in peak season - July and August. Off peak, discounts are possible for longer stays, or if only 2 adults occupy a property.

DION-ZIOS belongs to Georgos and Dimitria; Dimitria speaks fluent Australian, and usually lives on site. The garden is toddler safe (she has young twins) with the pool fenced off.

Our House

The House. It’s a big house, with four bedrooms, loads of leisure space, a big basement/cellar and garden. We have lots of room for friends and relations, and enjoy having you to stay. We don't let rooms. Yet. We'd consider selling it - but only when we've built some bungalows next door to move into - in a couple of years. Think €400,000.

Friends and Relations. We assume our guests would like to look after themselves and be largely independent of us, meeting up for the occasional taverna meal or barbecue on the terrace. So that’s the default arrangement. Do your own thing. Of course, we’ll introduce you to the area, show you the good tavernas, places to visit and so on. The house takes 6 in comfort, 8 when sharing showers/loos, and even 10 or 12 if we bring the living room divans into use. No privacy in the living room though!

Downstairs. Downstairs there’s a big communal lounge/dining/kitchen room, opening on to a large terrace. We’ve made a table and Caribbean-style chairs for this terrace. Beware the stairs leading up  – Greek style, they don’t have any banisters.  Indoors is the main visitor’s double bedroom and visitors’ shower/loo. When there are only four of us in the house, that shower/loo is all yours. The lounge area has a large fireplace, and two sofa/divans. These are used to put up extra bods if have more than 8 staying – as long as they don’t mind a complete lack of privacy and can live out of their suitcases – good for kids.

First Floor. First floor is our double bedroom, our shower/loo, and a guestroom with two divans. There’s a door leading to a large terrace (great views) with tables, chairs and a covered kitchen area (with a large barbecue fireplace, a tap and a fridge!). We don’t mind upstairs visitors using our loo at night; saves a long trek downstairs.

‘Crow’s Nest’. A spiral staircase leads from the upper terrace to the crow’s nest, a 3m x 3m room with two divans and a balcony with lovely views.
